Think About It

आज मुझे घर जल्दी आना है...कल पार्टी पर क्या सर्वे करना है? मुझे नही लगता यह बंदी अच्छा काम कर सकेगी...शायद येही करना सही है...

All sorts of thoughts going on in my mind. And they all speak the same language - Hindi.

Having met people who speak various languages, it is surprising to know that we all talk to ourselves and think in only one language. The language we are most comfortable in. The language that we can express the most in. And the language that comes naturally to us.

For me it's hindi all the way. No matter how fluent I am in English or my mother tongue, or that my first instance of initiating a conversation is in English, I am always thinking in Hindi.

What is your "thinking" language?

@myspace: I agree. How would you describe expressions like "gotey laga kar dhoondna padega" and "sai sai sannata" in any other language?!

yeah same here:), sometimes I feel so much like speaking with somebody in Hindi. Once one of my maharashtrian friend said that she had made friends with a certain lady only for the reason that she wanted to speak marathi with some one( she was living in UP), and now I understand what she meant.

@renu: true. You miss being in the same surroundings. No matter how progressive we are, its always nice to be able to get back to our roots.
@myspace: yup there are plenty terms which are best expressed in Hindi.

ooooohhhh I just commented about this 2 days back on another blog. Though I spk fluent Malayalam if I want to argue or fight I automatcally switch to English. But funnily enoff if I need a proverb to explain a situation the hindi ones come to mind first...like 'ulta chor kotwal ko....' or 'ghar ki murgi...' or few words like 'gheesi-peeti', 'achaaar', etc.
Nowadays hindi is 2nd language for the husband & me if v want to spk something which v dont want the kids to understand. ohoh I'm deviating from the topic....better stop b4 i run amok;-)

I forgot to add "meri billi mujhee se meow"....one of my favourites;-D

@reflections: Really? seems I share the same thoughts as someone else out there in blogosphere!
I agree somethings are best expressed in their real language and nothing better than a 'code lang' in front of kids ;)
But when you think in your mind, which lang do you use? Malyalam. Hindi or English? For me, even when I express myself in English, I am still thinking in hindi...It's like my backend programming language is Hindi, and the front end is user friendly and in Enligh! haha...what an analogy...
and here's another one on billi -'nau sau chuhey khaa ke billi haj ko chali...' :)

Ummm....I guess its english....[Nancy takes 2 mins to think]...yes english it is.
Hindi as code language will not last very long coz the daughter is learning hindi in school, so i guess another year she may not be able to say but def understand whtever we spk. The only language left to use as code language is Kannada which I'm not very fluent in but can manage to save my life with:-S
Hey, did u guys spk P-language in school? At one time P-language became such an FAD in school.

However, about 10 percent thinking is done in English too, especially when I m in a fight with M.

DeeplyDip said...

@mampi: and I loved the punjabi flavour in your posts!

Mampi said...

DeeplyDip said...

@mampi: No link at all...but after being brought up in north india, understand the language well...
